2011 Carta Design stats

2011 was a busy year for us at Carta. We designed, built and launched 11 websites, designed 7 logo identities, shot 18 photoshoots, sent 43 e-newsletter campaigns and notched up a total of 339 new jobs in the last 12 months. So, with all that, there hasn’t been a single quiet patch to mention. We’re back from the Christmas break and raring to go.

Thank you to all of our customers for your business in 2011. We hope you have a successful 2012.

Origin craft fair, London / News

Origin 2010

23-29 September 2010
10am – 6pm
Old Spitalfields Market, London, E1 6EW

Origin is the Crafts Council’s annual showcase of original contemporary craft, bringing together 220 of the most innovative UK and international makers for 1 week. It offers visitors a rare chance to buy directly from the makers and meet them face to face.

I’m off to London next week for a good nose around Origin, the designer-maker craft fair. I last went to Origin in 2008 when it was located at Somerset House. Now at the newly renovated Old Spitalfields Market, only one week long and no change over, it means being able to visit all the exhibitors in one go. Much better for non residents of London. So, if you are interested in high end designer-maker’s work then Origin is the show for you. For more info see for more details.

Can design be bettered? / Blog

Friday, August 6th, 2010

I keep my bike in the studio when I’m working. Firsty for security and secondly to stare at and wish I was on a long ride somewhere. Yesterday I looked over at it, perched in the corner, and wondered if there are some designs that will never be bettered. The bicycle’s diamond shape frame hasn’t been trumped in over 100 years. Not through lack of trying just lack of achievement. And is 100 years of product design long enough to find a solution. I think so, and therefore I find it a bit bonkers, being a designer, that there are some everyday items in our world that will never change design – ever.

A photo from Paris 2008 trip / Blog

Friday, August 6th, 2010

I just came across this photo I took in Paris back in 2008. It was taken in one of the gardens lining the Champs-Elysées. I asked my wife (left) and our friend, who was guiding us around Paris, to sit on the bench so I could get the scale with the large fingers sculpture behind them. I shot it from across the park to get the flatness that I was after. I also like the uniform siting position – which wasn’t staged.

A new studio for Carta

Friday, June 25th, 2010

Illustration by Simon OxleyIt’s been just over 5 years since Carta was founded in the spare room of our home and times have changed some what. We now have a beautiful daughter who is going to need a room of her own soon. Carta has outgrown it’s current four walls and needs a bigger place to call home. It’s not going far though, just a 10 minute cycle commute out of Penzance towards Newlyn and up to Trereife. I’m looking forward to the ride each morning, it’ll blow the sleep from my eyes in the morning and the working day out at the end. The studio is in a rural location and will be the perfect space to grow Carta even more.

I’ll post more details when I’m up and running soon.

A long time coming…

Tuesday, June 1st, 2010

So, here it is. The new Carta Graphic Design website. It’s taken me a long time to find the time to re-design my own website. I have been busy looking after my clients design work (rightly so) and neglected to do my own. It really couldn’t go on any longer. I have used the wonderful wordpress for the CMS system and have gone for a blog feel this time so I can update quickly. New design projects will be viewed on the home page and then in their relevant categories to archive them.

There is a small selection of work on the portfolio pages at the moment. It’s going to take me a while to upload the backlog of design work I have on to the website, so please bear with me. Please take a look around. If you have any comments please let me know.

Thanks, Neil

p.s. As a celebration for getting the new site finished I’m going to be running a FREE competition to win an Apple product soon so watch this website and for more details!

Weekend working

Sunday, October 4th, 2009

With a great many things going on in my life at the moment I’m currently finding time at a weekend to catch up on work. Business paperwork is my weakness and it’s the one thing I put off doing the most. Its my toad. Sat there, winking at me, second tray down in the window seat. Gah! I’m sure this goes for a lot of sole traders without admin support. I was only talking with a client about this very subject a couple of days ago. He is now taking the step of employing someone to help a few hours/days per week. Anyway, this weekend I’m catching up on web design work. Back on track now thanks to a quiet phone and some Ian Brown tunes in the background.
